News Anchor Learns of Colleague's Suicide as She's Reporting It
Lee Chingyu, an anchor for Taiwan's Next TV News, choked back tears as she discovered live on air that a friend and colleague at another network had been found dead in an apparent suicide.
CtiTV anchorman Erich Shih, 46, died at home Thursday, apparently by his own hand. His wife discovered his body around 5 p.m., with a plastic bag over his head. He left no note, and there were no signs of a break-in
Shih had been with CtiTV since 2008, and previously worked as a U.S. correspondent for TVBS. Others at Next TV reportedly knew him and learned of his death for the first time as they worked to report it.
An anchor at Taipei's Next TV News was put in the unfortunate position this week of reporting her friend's suicide as a breaking news update. Lee Chingyu received the report live on the air and discovered what had happened to friend and colleague Erich Shih as she read the news.
Chingyu's voice begins to break as she reveals what happened,
but managed to maintain her composure throughout the short report.
Below is the translation of her report as it appears on YouTube's closed caption subtitles: "Breaking news just in. Wissam Abdallah, an Australian filmmaker, had the opportunity to give his girlfriend a rather unusual present for her birthday. Wissam was working on the official Tomorrowland aftermovie in Belgium on July 27 and he asked musician Steve Aoki if he would give his girlfriend a face full of cake to celebrate the occasion. Aoki is famous for throwing cake into his fans’ faces, and it appeared that Wissam’s girlfriend knew what was coming.

Baby goats invaded a playground in this video from Ole Miss Franny’s Farm, New York. The goats are seen running down the slide and bouncing on the trampoline at the farm’s playground. Caterina Urban filmed the video while working at the farm in 2012. Caterina and her boyfriend took care of goats, horses and pigs, but says the baby goats were her favorite. Artist turns central street into giant water slide
Bristol artist Luke Jerram turns Park Street into a water slide! On the May 4th this giant 90m (300ft) water slide was installed on Park Street in Bristol, England as part of Making Sundays Special and the Bristol Art Weekender. Running from 11am-5pm for one day only, the day was an event for the city to remember! 96,573 people signed up for their chance to get a 'ticket to slide' through a ballot, with only 360 tickets being issued to a few lucky individuals. Enabling people to navigate the streets of their city in a new way, the slide is a simple architectural intervention and a playful response to the urban landscape. Like many of Jerram's projects the installation requires public participation to be activated. The person on the slide becomes the performer, while spectators either side watch on. Ted the dog was in his kennel on this Kentucky hillside during some heavy rains. The rains caused a portion of the hillside to collapse, slamming into Ted's kennel. Ted was unhurt and can be seen in this security camera footage meandering around the backside of the shed after the slide comes down. Says his owner, "After surviving the slide, we changed his name to Lucky." Credit: Darcy Howell
Sometimes in the dead heat of summer, you have to come up with crazy ideas to keep cool. It doesn’t get much crazier than super-charging a slip ‘n slide using a high-powered motorbike. In this attempt, the motorbike drags the sled down the slide at ludicrously high speeds, causing the rider to fly into the air and come down with a hard, and wet, bang. Credit: YouTube/Marek Wolski
